New platforms and channels are competing directly with traditional broadcasting. YouTube, ranked number 1 for online video, has recently announced its plans to offer full-length TV shows and in less than a year Hulu has become one of the top 10 most popular places to watch video online (currently planning to spread beyond US borders). The growing popularity of online viewing presents big challenges for traditional broadcasters: If you don’t come up with the right services online then you face losing audience share to sites like YouTube and Joost, who’re growing their internet libraries of prime time content. Go online and you face streaming and licensing costs and mounting pressure to transform a traditional media business into a nimble digital media company. Right now, it remains unclear who will win the race for audience share online, but, this could all change come 2010:

"Flashpoint" is a dramatic series about an elite tactical unit with a Canadian metropolitan police force. It is created and written by Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morgenstern and executive produced by multiple Gemini Award-winner Anne Marie La Traverse for Pink Sky Entertainment and Bill Mustos for Avamar Entertainment in association with CTV and CBS Paramount Television Network.



What began as a CTV project to encourage actors to submit scripts to CTV, turned into a 13 episode series in its first season. Since airing to popular reception in both countries, CTV and CBS renewed the show for a second season of 18 episodes. "Flashpoint" is the first Canadian series aired during prime time since "Due South". It debuted in July 2008 simulcast on CTV in Canada and CBS in the US. Meet the producers to learn about the creative journey of this unique Canadian success story.

For five seasons Jack Bender has guarded the secrets to the mysterious island and its time traveling castaways of ABC’s dramatic series “Lost.” Although there is little chance that BANFF delegates will get the inside track on the storyline for the final season, Bender will discuss the ‘making of’ “Lost” and his experience of directing a successful TV network series, and maybe if we’re lucking, he’ll tease us with a secret or two.

• Casting a show like “Lost” is crucial to its success, as a director, how do you bring out pure, naturalistic performances in what is in many ways a very fantastical show?
• How important is viewer feedback to the storyline? When a character is killed on the show, and then returns, is it due in part to viewer response or is it all part of the master plan?
• From the pilot, was the story written with an ending in mind, and if so, how far in advance are the scripts written? Were all the main characters planned from the start or are they written in as the story develops?
• How involved are you in the creative process and script development?
• “Lost” tackles some big themes: death, rebirth, redemption, quantum physics, and other philosophical and religious undertones commonly found in the sci-fi genre; how do these issues factor into script development and direction?
• “Lost” often looks more like a feature film than a TV series; from an executive producer’s perspective, how do you achieve such a high standard with the budget on a drama series budget?
• With so much interest in the mystery surrounding “Lost” how do you keep the secrets so well kept and out of the public domain?
• “Lost” fans are wondering ‘where is this going and how are they going to wrap up all the loose ends in one more season?’ can you give us any information on the logistics of wrapping up season six?

In 2009 the CRTC has undertaken a variety of consultations on New Media and traditional broadcast regulatory frameworks to deal with disruption across the media value chain. Additionally Canadian Heritage and House and Senate committees are looking at the "crisis in broadcasting." The debate in 2009 increasingly has focused on the negative rather than the positive and emphasized intervention online and taxation/subsidy as the way of the future. Increasingly regulators and policy-makers seem transfixed by the erosion of the local broadcast market. But is all this navel gazing that has turned attention away from the dramatic changes being brought about by broadband networks and the internet, explosions in diversity and choice and the fight for rights. Is it still heresy to suggest the consumer is in charge and that what has value is not what the regulator may deem as critical(local content) but what is deemed important by the consumer? Is it time to recognize that protecting sacred cows no matter how holy may be a prescription for failure and that the real issues of the day for 21st century Canadian content is all about consumer demand, the protection of rights versus fair use and a recognition that software and applications are as important in the digital market as the story itself.

The program is designed to offer emerging producers, writers and directors with development opportunities in the production of multiplatform content by training them to develop integrated projects and pitch them successfully both to Canadian and international buyers.



Prior new media experience is not necessary; however applicants must be professionals from the new media OR film & television industries. Writers, directors, interactive designers, show developers and TV, film and new media producers are especially encouraged to apply. There are 9 slots per team.



Each team will be guided by an expert in cross-platform production. Your team lead will be on hand to help guide you through the project.

Canadian tv producers often ignore axillary avenues of revenue but these can often prove to be more lucrative than traditional distribution. Chris Knight is an exception to this rule. Not only does he retain distribution rights for all his properties which have been sold to 96 countries, his unique business and branding perspective has him thinking up ways of exploiting aspects of each individual tv series from the outset. He no longer refers to himself as a tv producer but rather as a Brand Manager. In this workshop you will learn the following:

• How he negotiated a deal with Walmart USA to sell their shows packaged with a cd of recipes
• How maintaining all music rights and thematically creating music for each series enables him to sell cds of this music on his website
• How he managed to sell 86,000 cookbooks in 2008 when a successful run is a sale of 5000
• How you can do all this too and increase the profits of your tv property

Thanks to teenagers who led the revival with a little MOW called “High School Musical,” MOWs and miniseries are experiencing a re-energized popularity. But how can you produce the next big hit? To grab the audience’s attention and keep it beyond the first commercial break, an MOW or miniseries needs a few important things – a captivating title, a catchy concept and a cast with chemistry. Starting with this formula, an MOW has the potential for great success. Representatives from four networks participate in this panel discussion about the emerging trends, finding the right opportunities, branding strategies, and most importantly, who’s looking to buy.

• MOW’s are structured differently from mini series and feature films, why does this format have an eight-act structure and why is it important?
• What are the structural elements required by each network for a successful pitch?
• How do networks create branding strategies for promoting MOWs and miniseries and how does this affect script development and the submission process?

"Hung" is a half-hour comedy about former golden boy RAY DRECKER who was destined for success until an injury stifled his dreams. Now, as a high-school teacher and basketball coach, he's underpaid, uninsured and embittered that his wife of 20 years (Anne Heche) has left him for her dermatologist. After a fire damages the rundown Detroit home he inherited from his parents, Ray's fortunes reach an all-time low when his twin children choose to move in with their mom and her new husband.


Lonely, run-down and at wit's end, Ray attends a local self-help class whose mantra is to identify a personal "winning tool" for financial success. After a not so fulfilling encounter with a fellow attendee - would-be poet Tanya (Jane Adams) - Ray has a "eureka" moment that inspires him to take advantage of his greatest asset… in hopes of changing his fortunes in a big way.


"Hung" is created by Colette Burson and Dmitry Lipkin and executive produced by Burson and Lipkin along with E-ONE's Michael Rosenberg for HBO Productions. It is set to premiere on HBO on June 28th, 2009.

• How did you go from the initial high-concept idea behind "Hung" (that of a guy who has only one thing going for him) to the fully fleshed out world of Ray Drecker?
