Motivated by the great success of the 2009 Banff World Television Awards, the Banff World Television Festival is proud to announce a new competition for the 2010 season that aims to honour the raw talent and creativity behind the Pilot.

The inaugural Banff International Pilots Competition and Awards aim to recognize the talent and creativity it takes to conceptualize and create a pilot, be it online or on television. The competition accepts submissions from both “virgin” producers who have never had a show or program broadcast in any way, as well as “veteran” producers with at least one show broadcast on cable, satellite or the Internet, or with a show in full production.

Both "veteran" and "virgin" producers may enter any of the following three categories, based on the length of their pilot submission:

  •     2 to 5 minutes
  •     5 to 20 minutes
  •     more than 20 minutes

Winners of the 2010 Banff International Pilots Competition will be presented in June 2010 at the 31st Banff World Television Festival.

Development and Commercialization Opportunities

With Absolutely Independent, The Format Agency, our best independently produced pilots will have an opportunity to sign a development contract aiming to transform the honoured pilot into a commercially viable program, no matter that format or genre. It will be up to the rights-owners of the honoured pilot to negotiate with Absolutely Independent.

Absolutely Independent markets TV Lab worldwide and distributed the formats that do not have an international outlet.

For more information about Absolutely Independent, please visit their website at www.absolutely.nl.

Broadcasting Opportunities

With our Broadcast partner TV Lab, an initiative of TV3, a Dutch public broadcasting organization, and NPO’s third channel, Nederland 3 (Ned 3), we are offering to leading programs of the competition the possibility to be broadcast, first in Holland, then on stations in various countries through our other broadcasting partners.

Since its establishment in August 2009, TV Lab has achieved great success with various pilots around the world.  Among their recent successes are: Claudia op Vrijdag (Claudia on Friday), made by Dutch public broadcasting organization Vara; The Bubble from Armoza Format (From Israel); and the Dutch Eyework’s format, They Know What You Did (Ik Weet Wat Jij Deed), made for public broadcasting organization Tros.  All started with a broadcast on TV Lab!

Already eight formats from the TV Lab project, will air in 2010.  Maybe the next one will be yours!
